My BIGGEST vertebrae yet! Fossil hunting a new spot in a remote corner of New Zealand

A while back I found a promising look fossil site on Google Earth, it was a bit off the beaten track so I've been waiting for the right time to go ...

A while back I found a promising look fossil site on Google Earth, it was a bit off the beaten track so I’ve been waiting for the right time to go and explore it a bit more. This past weekend looked to have really good weather so I packed some lunch and set off! I had to cross a few rivers and luckily found a nice game trail that led to the beach.

I wasn’t sure there were going to be any fossils, which would have made for a short video, but luckily there were some! Turns out there was a really BIG fossil as well!

From what I can figure out, this is a late Miocene area, perhaps as old as mid-Miocene. I feel like this could be an important site, it just felt like there was a discovery waiting around the next corner!
