I head over to Motunau Beach in North Canterbury today for a fossil hunt. I am hoping to find some Miocene era penguins, sea birds, crabs and whales. Motunau is a well-known fossil crab hotspot with the most common being the Trichopectarion greggi (Spider Crab). I found my first ever fossil in New Zealand here, a single dolphin vertebrae, so it is always exciting for me to go back.
Earlier in the year, I found a concretion containing a very well preserved Pie Crust crab. This species of crab is still around today.
Numerous penguin fossils have also been found at this site, as well as some toothed sea birds.
