I took a bit of a road trip around the South Island of New Zealand a while back and stopped at a couple of fossil sites. This was the first spot and has some beautiful fossil leaves.
I head out to a Miocene area, around 13 - 16-million-years-old, that is known for it’s fossil leaves. It didn’t disappoint at all! The challenge was just finding something small and complete. I didn’t have much time at the location but managed to find a small rock to take home with me. It’s definitely a place worth visiting and checking out again.
You can find fern leaves there as well, next time I will spend a day or so there looking at what can be found in that layer.
